Nearly half of all cancer patients will undergo radiation therapy during some phase of their cancer care. The role of radiation therapy is to cure the cancer or to alleviate pain and other symptoms of the cancer. When radiation therapy is used, one goal is to maximize the radiation dose to treat the cancer while minimizing effects of the dose on surrounding, healthy tissue.
At Mission Hospitals, radiation therapy services are provided by a dedicated team of professionals that work to ensure the most effective treatment and care. This team includes radiation oncologists (doctors specializing in radiation therapy), registered nurses, radiation therapists, medical physicists and nurse practitioners.
