When you are facing a situation where quality care is immediately needed, MAMA can provide it through rapid, advanced level transport. Since 1986, Mission Hospital has provided critical care transport through Mountain Area Medical Airlift (MAMA). With two helicopters available 24 hours a day from bases in Asheville and Franklin, MAMA provides air medical services to 17 western North Carolina counties, eastern Tennessee, northeast Georgia and northern South Carolina. The MAMA program has maintained a stellar safety record since its inception.
From premature infants in respiratory distress to serious traumatic injuries, MAMA's nurses, paramedics and respiratory therapists are trained to provide quality care in transport under medical direction from Mission Hospital.
Mission Hospital has a close working relationship with first responders and EMS who evaluate, stabilize and prepare victims to move to Mission or other major medical center for specialized care. In certain situations, when circumstances dictate, MAMA crews coordinate transport with ground ambulance.
