Dr. Richey decided to pursue a career as a hospitalist because he believes guiding patients and their families through an intense period of time during a hospitalization is very rewarding.
As a hospitalist, Dr. Richey specializes in caring for adult patients while they are hospitalized. He is trained to treat a wide variety of conditions and responsible for:
- Stabilizing patients and diagnosing their condition
- Managing patients' medications while they are hospitalized
- Ensuring the patient's continuum of care after discharge
- Explaining and communicating information about the patient's health problem and the treatment plan to the patient, the family and other doctors
He has special professional interests in:
- Geriatrics, palliative care
- Gastrointestinal oncology
Patient Care Philosophy: I try to approach patient care from the patient's perspective, by treating them as I would want to be treated and putting their needs first.

Perspectives on the Region: I grew up in Wilmington and got my medical degree in Chapel Hill, so I was exposed to the area and have loved Asheville. I have always been impressed with Mission's reputation in the medical community, and am privileged to work somewhere with several Centers of Excellence within one health system.
Personal Background: Dr. Richey is married and enjoys hiking, surfing, cycling, snowboarding and the art and music scene in Asheville.
